Encountering Haruken Real Mega at a Special Sale Event
As an aquarist captivated by the charm of plecos, I not only dedicate myself to daily care but also actively attend aquarium shop events in search of new encounters. Special sale events, especially those held by my regular shops, are a treasure trove of opportunities to find rare individuals that are usually hard to come by, or unexpected gems.
During this year’s Golden Week, I, without exception, visited a special sale event. That day, what caught my eye was a pair of Haruken RFxRF Real Mega plecos. In the display case, their overwhelming whiteness and pattern contrast shone brighter than any other pleco. What surprised me most was the price. I never dreamed I could acquire a pair of this grade at such a bargain price, typical of a special sale. I felt it was destiny and decided without hesitation to welcome them as new members of my family. This encounter truly reaffirmed the joy of pleco keeping.
What is Haruken RF F2 Real Mega?
The “Haruken RFxRF Real Mega” that I acquired is a highly regarded lineage among pleco enthusiasts. The parents are from RF’s lineage: Koba 83’s. By line breeding this lineage, even more refined individuals are produced.
The “F2” designation indicates that these are the second generation born from that cross. The lineage is further stabilized than F1, and the characteristics of the parents tend to be more strongly expressed. Furthermore, the “Real Mega” grade is a title given to King Plecos that have a particularly high proportion of white base color, with striking and beautiful whiteness. The more I learn about this lineage, the more I realize how special the pair I acquired is. They are truly the ultimate work of art, pursuing the beauty of plecos.
Amazed by the Real Thing: Whiter Than in Photos
The Haruken RF F2 Real Mega pair at the special sale event were about 7cm, still young fish with much growth to look forward to. What impressed me most, however, was their overwhelming whiteness. While the photos I had seen beforehand showed them to be very white and beautiful, the actual individuals I saw in person were far whiter than in the pictures, with a much larger proportion of white base color spread across their entire bodies than I had imagined.
Their beauty was striking even through the display case, but after moving them to my home aquarium and observing them closely, I was once again captivated by the depth of their whiteness and the sharp contrast of their black patterns. They are truly individuals for whom the phrase “much better in person than in photos” is perfectly apt. I feel that this pure white brilliance is a privilege unique to the Real Mega grade among King Plecos. I never tire of gazing at them every day, and their beauty brings me peace.
Rearing Environment: Carefully Kept in a 40x30x30 Fry Tank
The Haruken RF F2 Real Mega pair I welcomed are still young at 7cm, so I’m committed to particularly delicate care. In my case, I’m keeping them in a 40cm x 30cm x 30cm fry tank, which is placed inside a larger display tank. This method allows the stable water temperature and quality of the large filtration system to be reflected in the fry tank, providing a very secure environment for small individuals.
Specifically, while benefiting from the heater and filter of the larger display tank, I’ve placed multiple shelters in the fry tank for them to hide in. Since the water temperature and quality generally follow that of the larger tank, there’s also the advantage of much easier daily management. I hope they grow steadily without stress in this stable environment. I am watching over them with the utmost care to ensure they are comfortable.
Food: Health Management with Grow D and Paraclear
High-quality food is essential for the health and growth of plecos. For my Haruken RF F2 Real Mega pair, I primarily feed a sinking artificial feed called “Grow D.” This food is formulated with a balanced blend of nutrients that plecos need, supporting their healthy growth. Being a sinking food is also a good point, as it ensures that bottom-dwelling plecos can reliably eat it.
Furthermore, I also use “Paraclear” in conjunction to promote their digestion and maintain their health. Paraclear is like a supplement that is expected to improve gut health and aid in digestion and absorption. Especially during their juvenile stage, I believe it’s crucial for them to absorb nutrients properly and grow robustly, so by combining these two foods, I support their health from within. Watching them eagerly eat their food every day is one of my small joys.
Hopes for Breeding: Carefully Raising the 7cm Pair
The Haruken RF F2 Real Mega pair are currently 7cm. As plecos, I feel they are still a bit small to expect breeding. However, I am dedicated to their daily care, dreaming of the day they grow larger and eventually show breeding behavior. If I can pass on this beautiful lineage to the next generation, there would be no greater joy as an aquarist.
Breeding is by no means easy, but by maintaining a stable environment and providing high-quality feeding, I intend to raise them slowly and carefully so they can reach their peak condition. Imagining the day when fry are swimming energetically fills me with excitement. I will watch over them with love, without rushing, and at their own pace.
