For my beloved plecos, optimizing the aquarium environment is an eternal quest for any aquarist. Especially when keeping plecos like the King Tiger Pleco (Kimpeko) and Imperial Zebra Pleco (Impe), which captivate us with their unique beauty, water temperature management is arguably one of the most crucial factors influencing their health and vitality. Their ideal water temperature is generally between 26℃ and 30℃, and maintaining this range stably is essential for reducing stress, preventing disease, and preserving their vibrant coloration. While I’ve used various thermometers before, I was looking for a more accurate system that could provide real-time management. That’s when I learned about the release of the long-awaited “Waterproof Thermo-Hygrometer” from SwitchBot, a brand renowned for its smart home devices. I instinctively knew this was perfect for my pleco tank and didn’t hesitate to purchase it.

The compact package that arrived seemed to hold all my expectations. Considering the impact even slight water temperature fluctuations can have on plecos, the peace of mind that comes with constantly accurate data is invaluable. I was excited to see how this SwitchBot Waterproof Thermo-Hygrometer would help me perfect the tank environment, ensuring my plecos could thrive in the best possible conditions.

Upon opening the newly arrived box, I checked its contents. Inside, I found three items: the “main unit,” which, though simple, exudes functional beauty; a “manual” with clear instructions; and “double-sided tape” for convenient attachment to walls or other surfaces. I appreciated the lack of unnecessary items, making it ready to use immediately. The sophisticated design of the main unit, in particular, will enhance rather than detract from the aesthetics around the aquarium. A pleco tank is like a work of art, not just for the fish but for the entire environment, so I wanted to be particular about every device.

This straightforward setup is also very appealing to busy aquarists. The ability to move directly to essential water temperature management without being bothered by complex wiring or numerous accessories is a significant advantage.

Smaller Than Expected! Checking the Size

Holding the main unit in my hand, the first thing that surprised me was its compactness. Compared to a USB plug, its small size is striking. I was confident that this would allow for smart installation even in the limited space of a pleco tank. For equipment installed inside the aquarium, the ideal is something as inconspicuous as possible and that doesn’t obstruct water flow.

I couldn’t help but feel the advancement of technology, with accurate water temperature measurement and real-time smartphone transmission condensed into such a small body. Plecos are delicate creatures, sensitive to changes in their tank environment. Being small is a very important point, as it minimizes disturbance to their living space.

Powered by 2 AAA Batteries

Powered by 2 AAA batteries. Easy to use.

The SwitchBot Waterproof Thermo-Hygrometer uses two AAA batteries for power. This battery-powered aspect was a huge advantage for me as an aquarist. The area around the aquarium tends to get cluttered with many power cables for heaters, filters, air pumps, lighting, and more. Being able to install it neatly without adding another power cable is very important for increasing layout flexibility.

Without worrying about wiring, I can place it anywhere in the tank, freely choosing a spot less affected by water flow or a point where water temperature can be measured more accurately. This is an indispensable element for maintaining a stable environment for delicate fish species like King Tiger Pleco and Imperial Zebra Pleco. Battery replacement is also easy, and maintenance effort is minimized, so I expect daily management to become significantly easier.

Waterproofing Measures for the Pleco Tank

Although the product name includes “waterproof,” I decided to take extra precautions for waterproofing before introducing it into the tank, where my beloved plecos’ lives depend on it. My chosen method was to place it in a very common “zip-lock bag.” This simple method, by putting the unit in the bag and securely closing the zipper, prevents potential water ingress and brings the possibility of affecting the tank’s water quality to zero.

Plecos, especially King Tiger Pleco and Imperial Zebra Pleco, are very expensive, and stable water quality is an absolute condition for long-term keeping. Considering the risk of even minute substances leaching from the device or a malfunction due to water ingress, this extra step is by no means wasted effort. By implementing complete waterproofing, I can confidently submerge it in the water, allowing for stable long-term operation. This sense of security is one of the most important things for continuing to keep plecos.

Finally, Into the Tank!

Submerged in water. It's waterproof, so it's safe.
Submerged in water. It’s waterproof, so it’s safe.

The time had come to finally introduce the thoroughly waterproofed SwitchBot Waterproof Thermo-Hygrometer into the pleco tank. Considering the water flow and heater position, I gently submerged it in a spot where water temperature fluctuations would be minimal and where the plecos would likely feel the least stress. The tank already had several driftwood pieces and shelters, and by cleverly placing the device within these gaps, I could monitor the water temperature naturally without compromising the aesthetics.

King Tiger Pleco and Imperial Zebra Pleco are prone to loss of appetite and poor health if the water temperature deviates from their optimal range (26℃-30℃). Sudden temperature changes, in particular, can weaken their immune system and lead to diseases such as ich. Therefore, maintaining a consistently stable water temperature is directly linked to their health. I expect this device to be the guardian that watches over that “stability.” Even after submerging it in the tank, its presence was barely noticeable, and the plecos continued to swim around leisurely as usual.

App Setup is Surprisingly Easy

Once the device was in the tank, it was time for the SwitchBot app setup. Honestly, I had prepared myself for some hassle when introducing a new smart device, but the SwitchBot app setup was surprisingly easy. I launched the app, followed a few simple steps, and the waterproof thermo-hygrometer was linked to my smartphone in no time. There were no complicated pairing procedures or settings requiring specialized knowledge; the design is intuitive for anyone to use.

This ease of use is very important for busy aquarists. Being able to start water temperature monitoring immediately, without spending time on setup when already busy caring for plecos, is a huge advantage. The app’s interface is also very clear, allowing me to check not only the current water temperature but also historical data at a glance, making daily water temperature management significantly more efficient. It truly felt like taking the first step into “smart aquarium management.”

Confirmed 28℃ Water Temperature! Graph Display is Also Convenient

Once the app setup was complete, the real-time water temperature was immediately displayed. The number on the screen was “28.0℃.” This is precisely the ideal temperature range for King Tiger Pleco and Imperial Zebra Pleco, and seeing this number instantly brought a great sense of relief. Previously, I had to visually check an analog thermometer, but being able to check the water temperature anytime, anywhere, and in real-time on my smartphone is a game-changing experience for water temperature management.

Even better is the graph display function. The app clearly showed detailed data in a graph, such as a past maximum water temperature of 26.9℃, a minimum of 23.5℃, and an average of 25.9℃. By looking at this graph, I can visually grasp daily water temperature fluctuation patterns, heater effectiveness, and the influence of room temperature. For example, I can clearly see subtle drops in water temperature due to nighttime room temperature decreases or changes caused by the daytime operation of the aquarium chiller, allowing me to create a more precise water temperature management plan. Plecos are sensitive to temperature changes, so this graph data is an invaluable source of information for predicting their health status and taking appropriate measures. Thanks to this feature, I feel much more confident in keeping my plecos.

In My Case: A Hub Was Necessary

Initially, I thought my existing SwitchBot Video Doorbell would act as a hub. However, it turned out that a separate SwitchBot Hub was required for the waterproof thermo-hygrometer to connect to my smartphone. Please note that the video doorbell does not function as a hub.

Ultimately, I solved the issue by purchasing a SwitchBot Hub 2 separately. Please be sure to check the compatible hubs in the SwitchBot app before making a purchase.

💡 Check Before Purchasing!
Before buying the SwitchBot Waterproof Thermo-Hygrometer, check if your existing SwitchBot products can function as a hub. If compatible, you can use them as is.

Instantly Detect Water Temperature Anomalies with SwitchBot App Alert Settings

One of the great features of the SwitchBot Waterproof Thermo-Hygrometer is its temperature alert function. You can freely set upper and lower temperature limits in the app. When the temperature goes outside the set range, the thermometer icon in the app turns red.
Note: The alert setting alone does NOT send push notifications to your smartphone. To receive push notifications, you need to separately configure an Automation in the SwitchBot app (e.g., “If water temperature exceeds 32°C, send a push notification”). Please verify the latest specifications yourself.
