Today, I went to the tropical fish store and bought some used spiral filter media. And I finally set up a new tank for my Imperial Zebra Plecos. Although it’s a system assembled by gathering leftover parts, I believe it turned out to be quite a professional setup.

Purchased Used Spiral Filter Media and Pleco Breeding Caves at the Tropical Fish Store
I purchased 2L of spiral filter media used. They said it’s a fake Fujino Spiral, but since the price was low, it’s no problem. As long as bacteria can colonize it, it’s sufficient, and I prioritize practicality over appearance.
Along with that, I bought one pleco breeding cave as a trial. It’s a MINITEM white S size, made for spawning Imperial Zebra Plecos and other small plecos. Since the price was low, I slightly regret not buying a few more at once. I hope to get more next time.
Added Filter Media to the Hang-on-Back Filter of the King Tiger Pleco Stock Tank
A portion of the purchased filter media was added to the Kotobuki Profit Filter Big, which is used in the King Tiger Pleco stock tank that was set up yesterday. It’s in the form of packing spiral filter media into the filter media chamber of the hang-on-back filter. The rest will be used for the new tank that will be set up today.
New Imperial Pleco Tank: 40×30×30 Acrylic Side Flow Overflow
The main new tank is a 40×30×30cm acrylic tank (a leftover). I drilled a hole in the side, passed VU40 piping through it, and processed it into a side flow overflow tank. The piping exits from the side, passes through a hole in the desk, and drops down to the sump below.
Inside this tank, a Tetra Twin Brilliant Super Filter (also a leftover) is installed as a sponge filter.
Filter Sump: Fluidized Bed Filtration with Choice CF Mat + Matten Filter Function
For the lower level, I used a spare 60cm glass aquarium (GEX) as the filter sump. I divided it with a Choice CF Mat (Coarse), separating it into a pump chamber and a fluidized bed filter chamber. In the fluidized bed filter chamber, the coarse material of the CF mat fluidizes with the pump’s water flow, ensuring a large surface area for bacterial colonization. This setup also functions as a matten filter.
I’m using a newa MJ750 pump (a spare one). Both its head pressure and flow rate are sufficient for an aquarium of this size.
SwitchBot Waterproof Thermo-Hygrometer and 5-in-1 UV Sterilizer Also Installed
Of course, I also installed a SwitchBot Waterproof Thermo-Hygrometer. I buy more every time I add a new tank, and it has become an essential item for all my aquariums. The peace of mind of being able to check the water temperature in real-time from my smartphone is something I can’t do without once I’ve used it.
I also installed the 5-in-1 UV Sterilizer (HCF-SERIES) that I recently purchased in this tank. I’m looking forward to its aeration and water circulation effects.
Starting the Setup by Introducing One Fish for Now
First, I introduced one fish and began establishing the water. Seeing it cling to the glass surface makes me feel that setting up this system was well worth the effort. Once the water is established, I plan to slowly introduce a pair and let them settle in.
